Pre-Approved Secondary Dwelling Plans

Planning to add a secondary dwelling to your property?

The Comox Valley Regional District (CVRD) is offering free, pre-approved building plans developed in-house as a resource for homeowners. Designed to align with zoning and building requirements, these plans give you a clear, credible place to start—helping reduce design time and upfront costs.

Available for use on properties within the CVRD Electoral Area A, B, and C.

What These Plans Provide

A complete, pre-designed layout for a detached secondary dwelling—typically up to 90 m²—located on the same property as a principal residence.

These plans are intended as a starting point for your project. Site-specific requirements, zoning regulations, and servicing considerations will still apply.

One single-storey plan is available at launch, with additional options anticipated.

Book Your Pre-Application Appointment

Book a pre-application appointment if you are considering using the CVRD's pre-approved secondary dwelling plans.

A pre-application appointment gives you an opportunity to speak to staff early in the process, confirm whether your property is eligible, review zoning, and understand what permits, documents, and next steps may be required before you apply. This can help save time and reduce delays.

To get started, use our Book an Appointment page to request a pre-application appointment with Building Services. When booking, please have your property address and any preliminary project details available
