Temporary UV Treatment

An Interim Measure for Improved Water Quality

The Comox Valley Regional District installed an interim UV system at the existing chlorination station on January 19, 2018. This system is expected to reduce boil water notices by approximately 80 per cent.

The UV treatment is considered an interim measure until the new water treatment plant is built. Once the plant is operational in 2021, turbidity related boil water notices will be eliminated.

Quick Facts:

  • Adding UV treatment at the existing chlorination facility increased the threshold for boil-water notices from 1.0 nephelometric turbidity unit (NTU) to 3.0 NTU.

  • In recent years, around 80 per cent of boil water notices have been within this range – these will be eliminated with the new treatment.

  • The UV treatment system and installation came in under the $1 million budget.

  • The equipment will be moved to the new water treatment facility, once it is constructed, for additional cost savings.

  • The new treatment will offer interim relief to boil water notices, but is not a long-term solution. A new water treatment system is still required to address reliable, safe water supply issues in the long-term.
