The Comox Valley Regional District (CVRD) partnered with the City of Courtenay, Town of Comox and Village of Cumberland through the Regional Growth Strategy for Union of BC Municipalities (UBCM) funding towards a review on local housing needs, supply, demand and the provision of housing across the region. In 2018, the province introduced legislation requiring all local governments in British Columbia to review local housing needs and consider needs identified when creating policy and making decisions about development.
Within the Comox Valley, the Regional Growth Strategy provides housing goals for our region. The work being undertaken will help our region meet goal number one: Ensure a diversity of affordable housing options to meet evolving regional demographics and needs.
“The information collected will help our region identify gaps and address additional factors that may be impacting housing supply in our area,” explains CVRD senior manager of sustainability and RGS planning, Alana Mullaly. “The data will then build on existing affordable housing policies within the Regional Growth Strategy, municipal and rural official community plans, Cumberland’s 2016 housing needs assessment, City of Courtenay affordable housing policy, and Town of Comox’s housing affordability strategy.”
Consultants to undertake the study work have been solidified. Work with key stakeholders will occur this fall with engagement opportunities to follow.
