The Comox Strathcona waste management (CSWM) board is scheduled to adopt a new fee structure for the disposal of waste at the Comox Valley and Campbell River waste management centres at the Thursday, November 5th meeting.
Effective January 1, 2016 wood waste that can be diverted from the landfill (such as painted or stained wood, pallets, particle board, plywood and raw dimensional lumber) will no longer be classified as C&D and will remain at $120 per tonne rate. Wood waste classified as garbage (such as creosote timbers, wood painted with lead-based paint, laminated furniture, pressure treated wood and cupboards) will be charged $130 per tonne.
The CSWM board also recently recommended a fee increase for drywall (gypsum), to cover the cost of hauling the product to New West Gypsum (a Greater Vancouver area processor) for recycling into new drywall products. The cost to drop off drywall will be $225 per tonne effective January 1, 2016.
Furthermore, to comply with Worksafe BC guidelines, the Comox Valley and Campbell River waste management centres are no longer accepting drywall containing asbestos. The CSWM service requires all haulers of drywall to complete a “waste disposal” application prior to dropping off the material at the landfills. To download and complete the application, visit www.cswm.ca/diversion.
The “MSW-mixed with recyclables” rate will be applied when haulers cross the scale with loads of recyclables mixed with MSW or C&D. The “MSW-mixed with recyclables” rate is scheduled to increase on January 1, 2016 to $275 per tonne.
As a reminder, municipal solid waste (MSW) and construction and demolition (C&D) debris will also increase from $120 per tonne to $130 per tonne on January 1, 2016.

The Comox Strathcona Waste Management (CSWM) service is an extended function of the Comox Valley Regional District (CVRD) and is responsible for two regional waste management centres that serve the Comox Valley and Campbell River, as well as a range of transfer stations and smaller waste-handling and recycling facilities for the electoral areas of the CVRD and the Strathcona Regional District. The CSWM service manages over 100,000 tonnes of waste and recycled material and oversees a number of diversion and education programs.
