20% by 2020 are the New Emission Reduction Targets

The Comox Valley Regional District (CVRD) adopted a corporate energy plan in 2011 with a target of reducing corporate emissions by 10% by 2015. The CVRD achieved their targeted reduction and the 2015 emissions inventory were 27% below the 2009 emissions baseline.

“Being carbon neutral since 2012, receiving Partners for Climate Protection Milestone 5 from the Federation of Canadian Municipalities for corporate emissions and reaching our corporate energy targets have demonstrated our continued commitment to climate action,” explains CVRD Board Chair Jolliffe. “These successes would not have been accomplished without the dedication and insights from committed staff.”

With the successful achievement of the current corporate energy plan target, the CVRD has adopted a new target for the years ahead. By 2020, the CVRD is aiming to have 20% emission reductions from 2015 levels. In order to achieve this goal, anticipated actions include energy retrofits at the Comox Valley Sports and Aquatic centres, construction of an energy-efficient fire hall on Hornby Island, and further fleet management activities including the potential introduction of biodiesel.
