The changes will apply to the recycling depots located at Strathcona Gardens recreation complex, the Sportsplex in Campbell River, Quadra Island, Black Creek – Oyster Bay (2185 Regent Road - the old fire hall), Courtenay Country Market and the depot behind the Canex store in Comox. These depots will transition to “single-stream” recycling similar to the municipal curbside recycling program.
“We are making it easier to recycle,” said Jesse Lee, CSWM’s manager of operations. “Residents will not have to sort their recyclables into separate collection bins. Rather, residents simply have to place recyclables into any one of the bins. Emterra, our contractor, will take care of the sorting at its recycling facility.”
Beginning July 20, 2016 the depots will be changing to the new format that includes changing the bins and installing new signs. The replacement of the bins is expected to be completed by July 22, 2016. On an intermittent basis, a CSWM waste reduction educator will be onsite guiding and answering any questions about the changes.
These recycling depots are provided by the CSWM service for the purpose of collecting recycling from homeowners that do not have access to a municipal recycling curbside program. The space is generously provided by the business or organization to host them in their parking lot. The CSWM service has a contract with Emterra for the collection, depot maintenance and processing of recyclables. For more information on recycling depot service, visit www.cswm.ca/depots.
The Comox Strathcona waste management (CSWM) service is a function of the Comox Valley Regional District (CVRD) and is responsible for two regional waste management centres that serve the Comox Valley and Campbell River, as well as a range of transfer stations and smaller waste-handling and recycling facilities for the electoral areas of the CVRD and the Strathcona Regional District. The CSWM service manages over 100,000 tonnes of waste and recycled material and oversees a number of diversion and education programs.
