A mediator has been assigned to assist in reaching a collective agreement between the Comox Valley Regional District (CVRD) and its recreation facilities unionized staff, represented by the United Steelworkers (USW) Union Local 1-1937.
An affirmative strike vote for USW Local 1-1937 occurred on Sunday, November 4, 2018, initiating the labour relations process through the CVRD’s request for mediation. The appointment of a mediator ensures that no strike action will occur while both parties remain at the table.
“The CVRD is committed to continue working towards a fair solution and has requested a mediator to assist in the discussions moving forward“ explains Jennifer Zbinden, CVRD Senior Manager of Recreation Facilities.
USW employs 81 staff at the Comox Valley Sports and Aquatics Centres. Both facilities will remain open and programs will continue as usual throughout the mediation process.
