The Comox Valley Regional District (CVRD) is asking residents to help conserve water this spring and summer by launching a water conservation campaign.
“Education around water conservation is becoming more and more crucial as climate change and climate adaptation continues to challenge water supply and demand,” states Kris La Rose, Senior Manager of Water and Wastewater Services. “As we continue to see reduced rain in the summer months and higher average temperatures, fresh water becomes an even more limited and precious resource. Water conservation is extremely important to protect supply for domestic use and emergency fire protection purposes.”
In 2023, the Comox Valley Water System recorded a record-high use of over 10 billion litres of water. Water consumption almost triples during the summer months because of outdoor water use, like lawn and garden watering, when daily water use can exceed well over 1,000 litres per person per day in the Comox Valley.
There are simple ways to help reduce your home and garden water consumption, including installation of low flow fixtures and drought-resistant landscaping, and taking advantage of available rebates.
