Goose Spit roadwork plan to be shared at upcoming open house

An overview of roadwork, required forcemain replacement work and resulting careful environmental planning at Goose Spit will be shared with the public at an open house hosted by the Comox Valley Regional District (CVRD) later this month.

The open house will take place on Wednesday, January 18, 2017 from 4:30 - 6:30 p.m. at the Comox Senior’s Association - d'Esterre House, 1801 Beaufort Ave., Comox.

The construction, scheduled for spring 2017, will replace the existing aging forcemain sewer pipe which crosses the estuary. The new route will travel along Goose Spit Road and westward to Croteau/Docliddle Roads, where it will connect to a Town of Comox forcemain and ultimately the Comox Valley Water Pollution Control Centre.

"The CVRD is striving to minimize construction impacts on area residents and park users while also protecting the sensitive environment of Goose Spit," said Kris La Rose, senior manager of water and wastewater services. "The open house will give residents information about what to expect across the phases of construction once the work commences."

Informational displays and project experts will be on hand at the event to share details and answer questions. A presentation will begin at 5:30 p.m., delivering an overview of the project background, construction process and plans to protect Goose Spit's sensitive habitats of eel grass, yellow sand verbena plants and moths. Light refreshments will be available throughout the event.

HMCS Quadra's forcemain replacement project - estimated to cost approximately $1.6 million - is being funded by the Department of National Defence’s Capital Assistance Program.

The Comox Valley Regional District is a federation of three electoral areas and three municipalities providing sustainable services for residents and visitors to the area. The members of the regional district work collaboratively on services for the benefit of the diverse urban and rural areas of the Comox Valley.
