Electoral Area Residents Asked to Weigh In on Roadside Garbage and Recycling Pick Up

The Comox Valley Regional District is considering the introduction of roadside garbage and recycling collection in Electoral Areas A, B and C – but before further planning is considered, homeowners and residents in those areas are being asked if it’s a service they would like.

An online survey is available now at connectcvrd.ca/ruralroadsidecollection until September 11 – asking for residents’ input on how they currently manage their garbage and recycling, and how they would like to manage it in the future. The survey is available to all electoral area residents, excluding Denman and Hornby Islands, Mount Washington and already-serviced areas in Royston.

“Roadside garbage and recycling collection can reduce greenhouse gas emissions, increase recycling and ease pressure on the local landfill, all while improving convenience and reducing costs for homeowners,” said Director Edwin Grieve, Chair of the Electoral Area Services Committee. “Given some of the interest we’ve heard, and the opportunities available now, we felt it’s time to ask the community whether this is a new service they would support.”

While the community is providing its input, staff will assess rural areas to determine neighbourhoods that meet technical requirements. In the fall, electoral area directors will use community feedback from the survey to inform their decision on next steps. If approved, the community will be presented with a more detailed cost and operational plan, as well as information respecting public approval of the new service.

“This survey is an important first step that will give us direction on whether we should pursue this further – we are hearing from some residents that there is interest, but we need wider input to inform us on next steps,” said Marc Rutten, General Manager of Engineering Services.

To learn more about the Rural Roadside Garbage and Recycling Collection project, and to complete the survey visit connectcvrd.ca/ruralroadsidecollection. If you are unable to complete the survey online, surveys can also be completed over the phone by calling 250-334-6016 between 8:30 am and 4:30 pm, Monday to Friday.

The Comox Valley Regional District is a federation of three electoral areas and three municipalities providing sustainable services for residents and visitors to the area. The members of the regional district work collaboratively on services for the benefit of the diverse urban and rural areas of the Comox Valley.
