The Comox Valley Regional District (CVRD) was recently awarded a $500,000 grant from the National Disaster Mitigation Program to undertake coastal flood and sea level rise mapping.
The grant will develop flood models and mapping for present-day coastal flood hazards and future seal level rise flood hazards for approximately 200 kilometres of coastline within the region. As well, the mapping exercise will look at a riverine flood model and map for the Oyster River system.
“This grant will enable us to do detailed mapping of our coast in order to better understand the impacts of rising sea level and storm surge associated with climate change” explains Alana Mullaly, Senior Manager of RGS and Sustainability. “This information will help us to make policy and regulatory changes that will better prepare our community to adapt and take actions that will improve our coastal resilience. Regional flood mapping is a key component of our Regional Growth Strategy work on climate change adaptation.
It is expected that mapping work will start this fall with completion by spring 2020. There will be opportunities for community involvement within the process.
