Cooling Centres Open to Public as Another Heat Wave Descends on the Comox Valley

The Comox Valley Regional District is sharing ideas for those seeking shelter from the high temperatures. A heat warning is in effect and Environment Canada is advising daytime highs will be near 30 degrees Celsius, combined with overnight lows in the mid to upper teens today through Saturday night.

The CVRD and its municipal partners are advising residents who do not have adequate shelter, or want to escape the heat, to consider using one of the following options:

Courtenay, Florence Filberg Centre
Thursday July 29, 2 pm – 6 pm
Friday July 30, 12 noon – 6 pm
Saturday July 31, 10 am – 6 pm
Sunday August 1, 10 am – 6 pm

Courtenay, Rotary Water Park at Lewis Park (water park hours extended)
Thursday July 29, 10 am – 8 pm
Friday July 30, 10 am – 8pm

Comox Community Centre Indoor Cooling Areas (1855 Noel Ave)
Every Wednesday until 6 pm
Every Thursday and Friday 6 am – 6 pm
Every Saturday and Sunday, 8 am – 1:45 pm
Every Tuesday 6 am – 9 pm

Comox Fire Hall Outdoor Cooling Mist Station (1870 Noel Ave)
Daily 11 am – 5 pm, as well as a dog bowl for four-legged friends

Comox Rotary Splash Park, Marina Park (127 Port Augusta St)
Open daily 10 am – 8 pm

Cumberland Village Park, Water Spray Park
Open daily 10 am to 7pm

People are encouraged to drink plenty of water, even before feeling thirsty and to stay in cool places. Check on your loved ones and neighbours, especially seniors to make sure they are cool and drinking water. For more information on heat safety visit Island Health’s website.
