Businesses Asked to Join the Commuter Challenge

Comox Valley residents who track how they get to work the week of June 4 – 10 will be eligible to win a prize as part of Commuter Challenge week.

Commuter Challenge bus“The Commuter Challenge is meant to help people think about their daily commute,” says Vince Van Tongeren, Policy and Sustainability Analyst for the Comox Valley Regional District. “If it’s possible to take the bus, ride your bike, walk, carpool or work from home, even one day a week, you could be rewarded for taking the challenge,” he adds.

Commuter Challenge is a national event where cities and workplaces are encouraged to leave their cars at home and choose a more eco-friendly way to get to work. With all the road construction in the valley this year, this challenge may be a way to relieve traffic congestion.

“Reducing the number of ‘drive alone’ vehicles can improve air quality and relieve road congestion,” adds Van Tongeren. “A full bus can replace over 45 cars, and cycling, walking and telecommuting can eliminate emissions all together".

Workplaces are encouraged to register a team for free online at http://www.commuterchallenge.ca/ and then register as an individual representing their workplace. The more people that sign up and participate at each business, the better the chances are of winning. “

There are tons of prizes!” says Lindsay Eason, Transit Educator for the Comox Valley Regional District. “We all know that change is hard, so we have made it a win-win for the environment and participants by giving away a lot of prizes from local sponsors, $250 cash and a custom VIA Rail trip across Canada.” she adds.

The kick off event for the Commuter Challenge is on Friday, June 2 from 4-6 pm outside the museum near the 4th Street transit exchange. This event will wrap up Bike to Work Week and give cyclists a chance to win a prize package, and will also engage transit users and people attending the Elevate the Arts festivities. Anyone who registers for the Commuter Challenge either at the event or online this week has a chance to win food and beverages from Pizzeria Guerrilla, Gladstone Brewing and Mudsharks, and free workshops to LIFT Comox Valley ($200 value).
