Village of Cumberland

Take a stroll through the historic streets of Cumberland. Founded in 1888 by well-known businessman Robert Dunsmuir, the town was one of BC's busiest mining communities until 1966. The town once included large immigrant populations of Japanese and Chinese workers. Historic cemeteries and heritage buildings now mark the era while colourful stories of miners, immigrants and the frontier continue to echo through this 3,000-person community which is now a favoured spot for local artisans and musicians.

How to get there: Cumberland is an hour drive north of Nanaimo and is located south of Courtenay off Island Highway 19.
